What are the risks with immigration?
My recommendation is as follows: if you are going to travel within the country and you do not have your papers, i.e. if you are not legal, travel with a passport. - Danger to Public Safety: if you do not have a felony such as an aggravated felony.
If you are clear of these three conditions, then you will probably not be detained or deported. Therefore, the risk is minimal if you are traveling within the U.S. with a passport. Forget about the matricula consular and any other document.
