The first step to protect yourself is to prevent:
❌ Do not drive without a license
🚦 Do not commit violations of the traffic (red lights, speeding, lights damaged)
✅ Keep up to date your documents: registration, insurance and license
Officers need a legal reason to stop you. Avoid calling attention to and remember that in the 26 states, the police working with immigration.
If the police stops you:
Drop a little of the window to listen to the officer, and delivery of your documents for that space.
Be ready-3 of your essential documents:
License
Car insurance
Vehicle registration
Avoid confrontations: don't argue, don't run, do not resist.
❗ If you don't have these three documents, you should not handle. Consider using Uber or ask a family member to take you.
If it is ICE, who stops you:
Do not open fully the window.
ICE is unable to register your vehicle without a warrant (search warrant).
If they break the window to stop, that may serve as a legal argument in your favor with a “motion to suppress” in the immigration court.
Do not sign any documents or answer questions without your attorney.
You have the right to a phone call.
❌ Don't run away or resist: you could face criminal charges and lose the possibility of bail.
