Greetings Jorge Rivera, Immigration Lawyer

Today I'm going to tell you everything you need to know about this topic, because there are millions of residents who, out of fear of the citizenship are not naturalized.

Critical ages

There are critical ages that are important to know if you are going to be able to do it in Spanish:

  • If you are at least 50 years old and 20 years with the residence you will automatically be tested in Spanish.
  • If you are 55 years old and have been a resident for 15 years then you will automatically have it done in Spanish as well.
  • People over 65, 70, 80 years old who simply do not have the memory to be able to learn the government history questions can request medical certification, a form called n648, which can be filled out by a doctor, where you have to specify why you have a mental health condition that does not allow you to learn the necessary information for that history and government exam in English.

The biggest problem is that doctors, not being lawyers, fill out whatever they can, put anything on the form and often Immigration does not accept it.
So the key is to have the form filled out, obviously by a doctor, but to have it reviewed by your lawyer, because we as lawyers often have to send in the back to medical examinations to fill them out well, add more information, make the necessary corrections in order to comply with the requirements.
